Welcome

The most current work is a development of the drawings done in the series - 'Instructions on How to Build a Nuclear Submarine', and an attempt to fuse both the geometric elements explored in the Algorithmia exhibition work and paradoxical visual elements explored in previous drawings around nuclear submarines. These paintings and drawings reflect the paradoxical nature we share - the ability to be both good and 'evil'. This paradox lives in the enigma that is the nuclear submarine (weapon of mass destruction and peace-keeper). This is investigated using visual symbols, shapes and references which become visual paradoxes in the way we interpret/ percieve them

In my recent work I am drawn to the philosophical and aesthetic properties of mathematics for this reason. My initial explorations of the relationship between art and mathematics were based in geometry which in part were fuelled by my research into Plato and his writings on beauty, aesthetics and mathematical symmetry. Euclidean symmetry is invariant, in that transformations were continuous, whereas Plato’s Diamond Theory rejects this for variant and asymmetrical transformations. When coupling symmetrical variation with the notion that the artistic process itself is algorithmic, a structure and motivation for the most recent work exists. This is achieved through an interrogation of systems and structures, geometric variances, grid dissections, quantum symbolism (that submarine again) and scale. The formal relationships of composition, colour and shape are explored through both traditional and non-traditional processes. Mathematical relationships or numerical juxtapositions are present next to an algorithmic process which takes over and predetermination is replaced by aesthetic juxtaposition.

The research interests that underpin the work generally fall into the category of Evolutionary Theory. Earlier work concentrated on ideas derived from theories around the Perpetuation of Species - and more recently - Memory and Consciousness - mathematics - the artistic process and Meta-Modernism through painting and drawing.

I trained as a sculptor and whilst the most recent works are two dimensional in nature, they are really ideas towards sculptural outcomes in the future.
